Abstract


The purpose of the study is to describe code switching and code mixing which occurred in conversations in the WhatsApp group of Postgraduate students of Wijaya Putra University Surabaya and to interpret the influencing factors of their occurrence. This study used descriptive method and qualitative approach. The source of data in this study is primary data, that is, forms of code switching and code mixing which occurred in conversations in the WhatsApp group. Method of data collecting applied in this study is reading, recording, and giving codes on the conversations in the WhatsApp group that contain forms of code switching and code mixing in field notes. Method of data analyzing applied in this study is describing forms of code switching and code mixing and interpreting why they occurred in conversations in the WhatsApp group of Postgraduate students of Wijaya Putra University Surabaya and making conclusion based on the interpretation that have been made.
