Abstract

Indonesia is famous for its traditional medicine, and ranks second after Brazil as the country with the largest biodiversity in the world. Indonesia has extraordinary natural wealth, has been widely used as a treatment for the community, one of which is the cherry plant ( Muntingia calabura L ) which is believed to be a expectorant cough medicine, anticancer, diabetic mellitus, analgesic, anti-infmmatory and antibacterial especially the leaves. Cherry leaves have the ability to inhibit the growth of microbes such as C.diphteriae, S.aureus, S.epidermidis, and S.viridans. This is due to the cherry leaves contain a lot of flavonoids, which have the ability to inhibit bacterial growth. Sulaiman (2017) examined the efeect of cherry leaves extract on the bacteria streptococcus viridans that causes ginggivitis. Ifmaily (2019 ) has examined the inhibitory test of cherry leaves extract bacteria against streptococcus mutans. Streptococcus mutans is a bacterium that causes halotosis in humans. The purposes of research was determined the formulation of cherry leaves extract can be made as the mouthwash, to know the antibacterial test of cherry leaves extract against streptococcus mutans, and to know the preference of cherry leaves extract as the mouthwash on panelist. The type of research is experimental. The stages of study, the cherry leaves were extracted, the extract was formulated into the mouthwash with five formulation ; F0 ( base ), F1 (7,5% concentration), F2 (15 % concentration), F3 (30% concentration) and Fp as comparison ( Betadine mouthwash ). The antibacterial activity test were diffusion method using Blood Agar ( BA ) media, and data were analyzed by one way ANAVA. The hedonic test mouthwash on 20 panelist of shape, color, taste, aroma, and clarity, the data were analyzed in percentage. The result, three variance concentration of cherry leaves extract can be formulated into mouthwash. Mouthwash gives an average diameter of antibacterial inhibition that F0 ( 10,20 mm, F1 ( 10,40 mm), F2 ( 11,40 mm), and F3 ( 12,20 mm) and Fp ( 14,20 mm ) as comparison, and panelist’s most preferred formula was F2. In conclusion all formula can be made as the mouthwash. The formula that gave the greatest inhibition of bacteria was F3, and the panelist’s prefer was F2.
